American Legation Museum

What many travelers don’t know is that Morocco was the first country to officially recognize the independence of the United States in 1777. This early recognition laid the foundation for one of the world’s longest unbroken diplomatic relationships. The Morocco–US Treaty of Friendship, signed in 1786, is still in force today, making it the oldest treaty in continuous effect in US history.
